Yes. My ponysona is Inferno Flame and she's a fire element pony so I gave her a fiery mane and tail style and color. People might not think she's a fire element pony if her mane and tail style and color weren't fiery.

It depends. Some of my ocs have very specific mane styles. But others just have a general style. When I describe my oc green, I just say he has messy or kinda spiky hair. But when I describe my oc mithril, I go into detail, because her mane is one of the things that makes her stand out.
AldoBronyJDC Featured By Owner Sep 15, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I really think is very important, because you got to choose the perfect colors, the style, short or long, etc., for its mane and tail too. And because are the most attractive thing to see in an OC.
Linksy7968 Featured By Owner Edited Jul 12, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
Yes, because the mane should be a color that looks nice with the coat color. So, for example my OC, Claze, has a red mane with purple streaks because her coat is blue, and her hair was originally only red, so red+blue= purple, and decided to add purple streaks in the red hair.. Another example, Claze has red eyes which start to crackle like fire when she becomes pissed (angry =p) since her mane is red, and fire is usually red, but sometimes blue. o3o

Though I don't have an OC yet, I would say I'm going to have to spend most of the design time on the mane design.

Is that a trick question?!  :icondiscordtrollplz:
AkatsukiAndBloodstar Featured By Owner Apr 30, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Yes, very important.

Very, it's an important detail that must certainly stand out! Well, personally.

The colors matter most to me. A certain color scheme goes with a pony's natural talent.
MLPquang20-c Featured By Owner Jul 24, 2013  Student General Artist

Sometimes, the characteristics of a mane can really tell ponies apart from one another and define them for us humans.

It also shows the traits and characters of a pony reflecting his/her personality.

galacticpink Featured By Owner Jul 24, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Definitely, speaking for me personally. I don't mind others making thigns like pallette swaps as long as they're having fun, though! ^_^

Although my OC's is kind of plain case I couldn't think of anything. XD

Yes ;)
stupidtai Featured By Owner May 30, 2013
YES! It makes up who you are just as much as your cutie mark does
PandaWalrus Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Eyes, mane, tail and cutie mark are really the most important things. Everything else is just generic pony body
Denny-The-Punk Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Sometimes it is it all depends on how the pony looks like
SilvertoothTiger Featured By Owner Feb 22, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Awww yes. What would be so original if you don't have a unique mane style?
Vunlinur Featured By Owner Feb 14, 2013  Student Digital Artist
Oh it obviously is! Mane style is one of two factors, just near the color scheme, that defines originality! :)

Very. I know I love my hair... When I have to get a hair cut I get sad at losing my hair, and I try to keep it just long enough to be a little unruly. That's probably why I think manes are important, even if I don't get very elaborate with most of mine. Hair speaks.

Cutie marks get first consideration. After all everyone stares at the flanks first.

LOL truth
chainchomp7 Featured By Owner Feb 12, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Can't have a mane looking too crazy or just not the character's style.

It kinda personalizes the character just from the hairstyle~
Boltthehedgehogrocks Featured By Owner Feb 10, 2013  Student Artist
Yep, can't do it without a proper mane.
Mickey-the-Luxray Featured By Owner Feb 9, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Manes are one of the most important aesthetical aspects of a pony OC. As is color scheme, body shape, and that sort of stuff.

But the character is made in it's personality, and it's traits. Being adept or highly skilled at something makes up who they are, not their "super epiczz cutee mrk" and that.
TheatherOfAWitch Featured By Owner Feb 8, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Manes and tails are like someone's hair, they show personality and the are all different.
Keep-Yourself-Alive Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
The mane and tail style can say a lot about a pony. We wouldn't take Twilight seriously is she had Pinkie's mane!
Caty34576 Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
i dont think twilight looks good with pinkies hair XD
EnigmaticMalady Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2013  Student
I agree XD. It would look creepy.
Caty34576 Featured By Owner Feb 13, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Princess celestia with Twilights mane Woah i cant even imagine tht
Discord Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It's very important to me because everyone has their own styles and imaginations and I think it should be used in a good way. Using already used Manes and Tails just ruins the purpose of an OC.
KitsuneFoxx110 Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Student Filmographer
well of coarse it is ta me, jus look at mah OC's mane
its pre awesome if a do say so mahself =D
PennyWereSkunk Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yes of course but, I care a little more on making a back-story. It's better to get to know a character regardless of being good or evil. :)
GlitchKing123 Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Oh of course!
I think the mane is probably most important. A Pony's body is always the same,it will most likely have the same look as everybody else's. What makes it unique is the Mane. It shows the creativity in the pony,it shows off a lot of color.
Luted Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Yes. I would never, ever decide to grab a mane from the mane six. It wouldn't feel right.
Lumdrop Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
I'm surprised that anyone said no ^^;
Lumdrop Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Professional Digital Artist

You forgot to mention how in G1 the ponies' mane would magically grow back if it got shaved off!
You're gonna lose hipster points if you keep that up.
AnibarutheCat Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
of course it's important, have you make a bald pony? it's sad
DANMAKUMAN Featured By Owner Feb 8, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
::Ultimate LOL::
HoloSnipe Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
The mane style shows how they groom themselves and care for themselves; if they go for the simple, or the complex; if they're frenzied or calm; and so much more. EVERY aspect of design is important to a character, whether or not if it's one you made up for your own story or if it's an OC for your favorite show.
xEmaTheVampire Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013
true story. Hairstyle (or lack of hair to style) can speak VOLUMES about a character, and deserves just as much thought as any other aspect of the character does.
Lumdrop Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
Everyone who creates characters (for any reason) needs to read this comment.
HoloSnipe Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
It's my personal belief that if you're gonna make something, ya don't half-ass it. Just about every aspect of a person gives you a clue about who they are, and a character should be no different.

Also, is you screename a reference to the lums from Rayman?
MyLittlePrimo Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
Of course it is. I prefer my OC's features to stand out from others', and not have to steel those of the Mane 6.
Shortsy Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
When I made my OC, it took about 30 minutes just to find a good position/wave style for it! Especially when he's standing on his hind hooves, it can get pretty difficult. So yes, mane-style is important.
Neoslightning Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist Artist
If my unicorn was bald I'd hate myself forever plus I think the hair style looks cool it just needs to cover the beginning of the horn
LightningChaser2000 Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Yeah! I've always used Derpy Hooves's mane style!
ijustloveit619 Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Student Digital Artist
Ofcourse! It is one of the things needed to differentiate them from the other OC's
Spagooter-Cat Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Yes; it's a vital part of character design, and it's also part of showing a character's personality. For example: Rainbow dash has a short and spiky mane, showing her attitude and style, while fluttershy has a long, flowing mane, which indicates her gentle nature.
LittleCloudie Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013  Student General Artist
Duh, if it looks like something else, people would think it's another person's OC.
0ShadowArcher0 Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2013
The rar and epic styl of OCīs is so important for the artist. The mane or hairstyl is only 1 thing, but itīs to important, You cannot ignor it.
